Innovate Calgary’s Social Innovation Hub is proud to announce the launch of its inaugural Artist-in-Residence Pilot Program, an initiative designed to explore the intersection of art and entrepreneurship.

This groundbreaking program highlights artists within the entrepreneurial ecosystem to inspire new ways of thinking, foster creativity, and help social innovators tackle complex challenges through a fresh, artistic lens.

“Our mission is to foster a dynamic environment where artists and entrepreneurs can collaborate and inspire each other,” says Chantal Palmer, Community Manager of Strategy and Engagement at the Social Innovation Hub, Innovate Calgary. “Artists bring fresh perspectives that act as catalysts for social change, helping to drive innovation and strengthen communities across Alberta.”

Through this program, selected artists will embark on their own entrepreneurial journeys while contributing their unique creative approaches to solving social problems. The goal is to examine how artistic practices can be used as powerful tools in venture development and community building. This initiative will further highlight the interconnectedness of art, culture, and economics, making space for artists and the critical role they play in social impact.

The first artist selected for this pilot program is Sam Obadero, founder of Motif Photography. Born and raised in Nigeria, Sam immigrated to Canada in 2018 and established one of Calgary’s first Black-owned professional photo studios. His work as an artist and community leader exemplifies the values of this program—using his craft to build a diverse and creative community.

“My mission is clear – to inspire and empower, creating a welcoming and inclusive haven for art-preneurs,” says Sam Obadero. Through his photography and leadership, Sam has cultivated a space that celebrates diversity and fosters connections, making him an ideal partner for the launch of this initiative.

By welcoming artists like Sam into this program, the Social Innovation Hub seeks to demonstrate how the creative mindset can support innovation, drive social change, and build resilient communities. The program aims to show how art, in all its forms, can serve as a bridge between culture, community, and entrepreneurship.
