On April 30, 2025, after three successful years, Innovate Calgary is passing on the leadership of the Energy Transition Centre to ETC Foundation, a newly launched non-profit organization.
The ETC Foundation will advance the next iteration of an energy transition-focused venture support and community building program.
Throughout its three years of operations, the Energy Transition Centre supported researchers, startup companies and ventures at various stages of their innovation and commercialization journey. A few highlights of the past three years include:
- 150+ innovation and thought leadership events, 8000+ participants, and 14 knowledge dissemination sessions led by UCalgary faculty
- 52 UCalgary graduate student internships in partnership with the Faculty of Graduate Studies Transformative Talent Internships Program
- Partnership with UCalgary’s Global Research Initiative for technology testing and scale up, including supporting 3 postdoc positions
- 731 highly qualified personnel completed the Avatar program
- 62 small to medium sized enterprises were assisted with memberships, programming, referrals, and networking
- ETC members attracted $8.1M incremental private sector investment
- 20 cleantech opportunities were assessed for commercialization merit and prototype demonstration
Innovate Calgary will continue to offer venture development support through the UCeed funds, our innovation hubs (Aerospace Innovation Hub, Life Sciences Innovation Hub and the Social Innovation Hub), our programming (fellowships, workshops, expert advisor program) and the Technology Transfer Office.
UCalgary will continue in its role to advance energy sector innovation, aligning with the evolving needs of industry and research partners.
Changes to the Energy Transition Centre’s structure will enable the partnering organizations to refocus on their core strengths and continue to provide enhanced energy-innovation programming in the ecosystem.
