When Danny Zahynacz founded RAD Medical Technologies, he wanted to create tools that make orthopaedic surgeries safer and more effective. Preparing to launch its first product (an orthopaedic chair for shoulder procedures) and developing a hip positioning system with advanced sensor technology, RAD is already making strides. A key part of that progress has come from Innovate Calgary’s Expert Advisor (EA) Program, which has given Danny and his team access to the expertise they need at critical moments.
Danny first experienced the program while working at another Calgary startup. That early exposure showed him how valuable expert guidance could be, and it became a main reason for joining the Life Sciences Innovation Hub with RAD.
“The Expert Advisor hours have been fantastic,” he says. “Over the last two years, we’ve used them for regulatory support, building our quality management system, executive coaching, and even hands-on training for staff on Makerspace equipment.”
For a small company, the ability to access specialists without the cost of hiring full-time is a major advantage. “We can’t afford a regulatory specialist, but being able to sit down for an hour with someone who knows that world and get guidance on specific tasks has been a huge benefit,” Danny explains.
Innovate Calgary’s roster of experts and support from program managers make it easy to connect with the right people. “You can browse the list, but I’ve found it really helpful to talk with the program managers. They’ll recommend advisors based on your needs,” Danny says. “There’s always someone willing to help, and they’ve all been fantastic.”
Danny encourages other Hub members to use the program. “If you’re a member and not using your expert advisor hours, tap into it as soon as possible. It’s a huge resource for any startup.”
