Creating the next generation of innovators is essential to sustaining the cycle of new ideas and human progress. This belief sits at the core of MindFuel, a registered charity dedicated to fostering a creative outlook in youth.

MindFuel’s focus on entrepreneurial programming is part of what drives its strong partnership with Innovate Calgary. On March 7 and 8, the charity hosted its Tech Futures Challenge Prototype Development Workshop at Innovate Calgary’s Life Sciences Innovation Hub.

“Tech Futures Challenge workshops facilitate student-led innovation, allowing teams to develop prototypes for real-world problems in AI, robotics, biotechnology, and coding while receiving mentorship, industry resources, and technical support,” says Alla Bondareva, the Associate Director of the Life Sciences Innovation Hub Labs at Innovate Calgary.

Through this initiative, students experience real-time innovation, receiving guidance from industry experts, access to lab equipment, and hands-on support throughout the process. The workshop enables participants to develop their ideas from an initial concept into a working prototype.

In 2026, the Tech Futures Challenge (TFC) grew rapidly, hosting a larger number of young innovators throughout Canada.

“The program expanded nationally, featuring more than 30 projects from teams representing seven provinces: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick,” says Bondareva.

Now in its third year at the Life Sciences Innovation Hub, the Tech Futures Challenge continues to prepare young innovators to develop ideas around emerging markets.

“Students are exposed to cutting-edge technologies such as app and web development, coding, artificial intelligence, automation, robotics, synthetic biology, and biotechnology,” Bondareva explains.

The impact of this program is already evident. The Tech Futures Challenge has helped launch a new generation of entrepreneurs, with alumni achieving great success.

“Thirteen percent of TFC-supported projects commercialized within four years. Twenty-three patents and trade secrets have been filed by program alumni, and they have raised more than $43 million in venture capital as of September 2025,” says Bondareva.

MindFuel continues to inspire students to bring bold ideas to life, and Innovate Calgary is proud to host Tech Futures Challenge to help turn these concepts into reality.
