For Dylan Beesley, translating strong ideas into marketable products stems from his solid scientific background. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a minor in Nanotechnology from the University of Calgary, Dylan began his career at a biotech company, where he learned how to turn complex science into viable pitches for investors.
Being part of the Expert Advisor Program, Dylan helps early-stage startups identify and focus on their target audiences.
“It takes a bit more understanding to figure out who your core audience actually is,” he says. “I do research and then I translate that into something usable,” helping narrow their focus to specific market segments.
He also prioritizes effective communication with each client’s audience, doing this through several mediums, one of which is website building.
“It’s designing a flow and content for a website that helps people understand what a company is providing,” Dylan says. Additionally, he designs strategic assets which clients can include in their pitch decks.
Coming from a scientific background, Dylan approaches his clients with research-based methods, starting with an initial scope of the product: the work done in that field and its competitors, to identify both strengths and weaknesses.
“I take it as a research project between me and my customers,” Dylan explains, “to make sure that we both understand we are on the same page about how we want to move forward with the product”
When asked about the most important lesson taught by the program, he says “it forces you to evaluate exactly where you are with your company. It also forces you to take a longer look at where you want things to go, especially with my approach.”
For Dylan, the program is more than just entrepreneurship.
“People are trying to make the world better,” he says. “And part of what I do is help get the message out there.”
