Approximately twenty-five per cent of pre-hospital trauma cases require airway management by emergency response personnel, and delays in proper airway management are a common cause of preventable death in pre-hospital and emergency settings. If performed improperly, airway management procedures can cause secondary injuries to patients. Training emergency personnel to effectively manage a patient's airway is vital for patient safety and optimal treatment conditions.
Description of Technology
Airway procedures are not difficult under routine conditions, however, when complications arise, even experienced practioners can be challenged. One such challenge is when the airway becomes 'soiled' with bodily fluids such as vomit or blood - lowering the likelihood of successful oxygen delivery and decreasing successful endotracheal tube placement. Current airway training simulations attempt to replicate this soiling, however, their bulky or noisy designs negate the 'surprise' effect that would more accurately challenge trainees with unexpected conditions; furthermore, these devices also present physical hazards to the operators.
The Soiled Airway Trainer features a compact, easily concealed fluid delivery system for customized release of fluids in the airway during simulation. The system challenges trainees by closely mimicking real life airway contamination situations in the absence of noisy/bulky designs.
