Welcome TECHSTOCK Exhibitor: Livestock Water Recycling

Monday, September 11, 2017

1. What is your innovation story?
Livestock Water Recycling (LWR) is a privately owned Canadian company based in Calgary, Alberta. Our story is a combination of Canadian innovation and entrepreneurialism with a passion for the environment. For over 15 years we ran a successful business as a designer and manufacturer of systems for the treatment of hydrocarbon contaminated groundwater.
With experience in wastewater remediation, and a desire to continue to grow, we knew we wanted to do all we could to clean the world’s water. We looked for other opportunities in different industries to expand our passion and focus on the treatment of the world’s water. In 2003, following a speech by Al Gore, we discovered the dairy and hog livestock industry and learned they were drastically underserviced in the area of water treatment technology. According to the UN Water Development Report, agriculture accounts for 70% of global freshwater withdrawals. We knew that with our previous knowledge and experience in contaminated water treatment that we could have a big impact on the world by coming up with a solution for livestock farmers.

Livestock manure is traditionally stored in massive lagoons where runoff from storage and spreading activities has the potential to contaminate surrounding land, rivers, and lakes. We discovered an environmentally sustainable alternative to this practice where the water treatment system allows a farm to create a full circle – treating manure by recycling all the nutrients and providing clean water back to their crops. Our goal is to give back to the earth what we are taking from it.
We want to support farmers as they play an important role in society, working hard 365 days a year to feed the world. By 2050, farmers will need to double the world food production in order to meet the needs of 9 billion people. Innovation has lead us to develop the technology required to meet these needs while using fewer resources.

2. Do you follow a sustainable development agenda (for people, planet and prosperity) in your company / business?
LWR has a passion for water, the environment, and the important role farmers have on today’s society. We have introduced an innovative technology that revolutionizes the future of manure management and made a significant contribution to the advancement of modern agricultural practices that positively impacts the global water crisis. We are always innovating to improve our system and seeking out opportunities where our technology could be implemented to continue to contribute to a sustainable planet. Our practices always keep the planet’s prosperity in mind and is the driving factor in all our company’s practices.

3. If your enterprise could have a global application, what is your vision for transforming the planet?
LWR envisions a world where water is never scarce. As our technology is applied on a more global scale, our goal is to combat more than just one issue. While the livestock production industry remains our primary focus, our system could potentially be applied where clean drinking water is not readily available for human consumption. We could also tackle the enormous problem of food waste. Reducing groundwater withdrawals and conserving the earth’s most precious resource is how we hope to transform the planet.
